Ms. Chona Tura (right photo), senior science research specialist at Coastal, Resources and Ecotourism Research, Development and Extension Center (CRERDEC), presents her study on the biodiversity profile and carrying capacity of the Lamanoc Island Mystic and Mangrove Tours in Bohol. Tura presented the study during the First Annual Technical Seminar organized by the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) in Los Banos, Laguna on Monday, June 17, 2019. She recommends that the current efforts in the conservation, management, and protection of mangrove, terrestrial, and coastal resources in the island must be strengthened and sustained. ###

Supervising Science Research Specialist Jose Isidro Michael T. Padin of ERDB’s Coastal Zone and Freshwater Ecosystems Research Division (CZFERD) presents the result of the Manila Bay Vulnerability Assessment Study during the First Annual Technical Seminar held at the ERDB Auditorium in Los Baños, Laguna on Monday, June 17, 2019. Padin said that based on the study, it was found out that Manila Bay “is not all dead, but is in dire need of rehabilitation” because it still hosts a variety of ecosystems, such as mangrove forests, coral reefs, fish communities, and other marine lifeforms. Among the recommendations Padinpresented in the seminar calls for the reforestation of abandoned fishponds and sparsely vegetated mangrove forests, and proper maintenance and protection of the remaining mangrove stands, particularly those “in the highly urbanized areas of Manila and Bulacan.” ###

Forester Merlyn Dumalahay (right) receives an EAGLE trophy from Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu (center) and DENR Undersecretary Jonas Leones during the agency’s celebration of its 32nd anniversary. Dumalahay, who was raised in the highlands of Kalilangan, Bukidnon, was named top Implementing Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) for being an effective champion of the environmental crusade in the province of Camiguin in Northern Mindanao. The EAGLE, or Environmental Awards for Governance and Leadership Excellence, was conferred on field officials – from the regional to the community level – who have shown effectiveness and efficiency in delivering the agency’s mandate. ###
