DENR OIC Assistant Secretary and Biodiversity Management Bureau Director in concurrent capacity Ricardo Calderonawards the Certificate of Appreciation to Mr. Ed Sunico, vice president for sustainable business and communications of Unilever Philippines, for serving as resource speaker during the culminating activity for the Month of the Ocean, with theme “Closing the Loop: Opportunities for Collaboration,” held recently at the Manila Peninsula in Makati City. Sunico discussed the initiatives of Unilever Philippines to make the packaging of their products safe for the environment, such as the pilot testing of refilling stations for their shampoo products. He also revealed the company is targeting to shift to environment-friendly packaging by 2025. A study by Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey Center for Business and Environment indicated that the Philippines is among the top marine plastic polluters in the world. ###

Dr. Leila Africa, director of the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food at the University of the Philippines- Los Baños, gives a lecture on diet diversification on traditional and sustainable Filipino diets the celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, 2019at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City. In her lecture, Dr. Africa said that a person must eat nine servings of diverse fruits and vegetables to prevent heart diseases, while for cancer, it should be 7.5 servings. This year’s IDBD’s theme is: “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health.” ###
