MANLELUAG, Pangasinan- Sa tuwing ika-21 ng Marso ng bawat taon ay ipinagdiriwang ang International Day of the Forests o ang Pandaigdigang Araw ng mga Kagubatan na unang idineklara noong taong 2012. Ngayong taon, iba’t ibang aktibidad ang isinagawa ng Kagawaran ng Kapaligiran at Likas na Yaman- Rehiyon Uno. Ang mga opisina nito ay nagkaroon ng pagtatanim ng mga puno, pagtatag ng mini forests sa napiling munisipalidad, potting, at Information, Education, and Communication Campaign. Bukod pa sa mga nabanggit ay isinagawa sa pangalawang pagkakataon, ang International Day of the Forest Quiz Bee noong ika-21 ng Marso 2022 na may temang: Forest and Sustainable Consumption and Production na layong hikayatin ang mga tao na pangalagaan ang mga kagubatan at mapalaganap ang kahalagahan nito sa tao at sa mundo.

Ang patimpalak, na dating ginanap online at pinasimulan ng Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Group (RSCIG), ay idinaos nang harapang pagtitipon dahil sa pagluwag ng mga kautusan patungkol sa Pampublikong Pangkalusugan sa Rehiyon na nilahokan ng mga foresters o manggugubat mula sa DENR Pangasinan Field Offices.

 Ang naturang tagisan ng talino ay nahati sa dalawang kategorya, ang elimination at final rounds kung saan naipamalas at nasubok ang kaalaman at kagalingan ng mga manggugubat lalung-lalo na sa identipikasyon, batas, pamamahala, at pangangalaga sa kagubatan. Ang sinumang makuha ng nakamataas na puntos ay ang siyang mananalo.

Sa dalawampung nakilahok sa tagisan, hinirang na kampiyon sina For. Merygene Cupo ng CENRO Western Pangasinan at For. Gerry Matingin ng CENRO Eastern Pangasinan na tumanggap ng kumpletong collaterals ng DENR I, cellular phone load, at sertipiko bilang premyo. (DML-RSCIG)

Bakun 1Alilem, Ilocos Sur – Validators from the Office of Atty. Juan Miguel Cuna, DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations and Supervising Undersecretary for the EMB,  DENR Central Office conducted a site validation last March 23-25, 2022 at Alilem, Ilocos Sur as DENR-1's official entry for the Search for Recognizing Individuals/Institutions Towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (R.I.V.E.Rs) for Life Award 2020, Lower Bakun River, entered top 5 and will compete for the title with regions CAR, XIII, XII, and X. Cash prizes of Php100,000, Php75,000 and Php50,000 will be given to the 1st, 2nd and third placers, respectively.

Aside from the list of activities/interventions undertaken by the concerned Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs/CENROs) on their nominated river, the validation team also reviewed the Aesthetic Water Quality Improvement, Solid Waste Management, Partnership and Community Mobilization, and Information and Education Campaign (IEC) of the municipality. They were assisted by the personnel of the DENR I Regional Office, EMB  1, MGB 1, PENRO Ilocos Sur, CENRO Southern Ilocos Sur, and the Local Government Unit of Alilem, Ilocos Sur.

All were hopeful of being dubbed as the cleanest river in the entire country as the region's official entry last year, Naguillian River, won first place. This search, which was organized through the directive of the former DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu last 2018, aims to preserve and protect all rivers in the country from threats and pollution. SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region- I (DENR- I) celebrated the National Women’s Month 2022 with this year’s theme: “We Make CHANGE Work for Women.” To cap the six- year recurring theme, this year 2022 will on the sub- theme: “Women make change amidst Climate Crisis and Covid-19.” The National Women’s Month celebration was held at the DENR- I Regional Office, Government Center, Sevilla, San Fernando City, La Union on March 8, 2022.

This year’s sub- theme emphasizes on women exercising their choices taking chances to make their voices heard, and benefitting from and trailblazing changes. It is a celebration of Filipino women’s power to take the narrative, raise priority issues that matter to them, and call for concrete actions. It also focuses on including women’s concerns in the government agenda and enabling more women to implement and at the same time, demand programs and services that can bring the country closer to narrowing the gender gaps.

The DENR-I kick-off ceremony was led by Regional Executive Director Atty. Crizaldy M. Barcelo together with OIC, Assistant Regional Director (ARD) for Management Services Engr. Raymundo C. Gayo, ARD for Technical Services Felix C. Taguba, Chief, Administrative Division Mary Ann N. Escoto who is the new DENR- I Regional Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point Chairperson and members of GAD Focal Point. RED Barcelo recognized the contribution of women in the success of men. Specifically celebrating the contribution of the women employee to the attainment of the department’s target and accomplishments for the past two years amidst the challenges of the pandemic. Highlights of the program include inspirational messages from DENR- I key officials, presentation of DENR- I CY 2022 GAD- initiated activities, overviews of the #GADtoKnow Photo Booth and IEC Corner Juana and the “Serbisyong Legal para kay Juana.” The celebration concluded with the ribbon- cutting cum launching of the #GADtoKnow Photo Booth and IEC Corner located in the front of the DENR- I Office Building. SUYO, Ilocos Sur – With the aim to highlight the importance of actions to conserve and sustain wetlands, PENRO Ilocos Sur led by PENR Officer Rosemarie B. Jornacion through CENRO Southern Ilocos Sur under CENR Officer Danilo P. Manoloto, conducted a clean-up drive along Chico River situated at Cabugao, Suyo, Ilocos Sur in celebration of World Wetlands Day with this year’s theme “Wetlands Action for People and Nature” last February 11, 2022. The said river is also the official entry of Region I in the Recognizing Institutions/Individuals towards a Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (RIVERs) for Life Award 2021.

The activity was actively participated by employees of PENRO and CENRO Ilocos Sur, Saniata Environment 2022 Shireen Dicang Khalil, officials, and health workers of Barangay Cabugao, Suyo, Ilocos, Sur where a total of ten (10) sacks or 0.16 tons of wastes were collected. Everyone was able to pick up cigarette butts, food wrappers, used bottles, plastic bottle caps, plastic straws, plastic bottles, used clothes, slippers, and diapers. All of which post a negative effect on the watershed and its biodiversity.

After the clean-up, a short program was carried out where Saniata Environment 2022 Ms. Shireen D. Khalil shared her advocacies on the development and protection of the environment. CENR Officer Danilo P. Manoloto then appealed for the community’s continuous support and cooperation in all activities to be undertaken by the office especially that it is the entry for RIVERs for Life Award 2021. PENR Officer Rosemarie B. Jornacion, aside from enjoining the constituents of the barangay to be one with the department in the conservation of Chico River, also discussed the Classifications of Wetlands and the Priority Programs of DENR Secretary Roy A. ARD CO RETIREMENT 1

San Fernando City, La Union - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region- I (DENR- I) paid a very important tribute with the “Salamat-Mabuhay Retirement” rites for DENR- I Assistant Regional Director (ARD) of the Management Services Leduina “Wendy” S. Co at the DENR- I Social Hall on January 7, 2022.

The honoree and the birthday celebrant ARD Co, who rose from the ranks in the department, is a woman who possessed a very strong determination, a dreamer and environmental warrior, gallantly encountered countless challenges before she reached her current position as Director III in the DENR. She humbly took pride of her humble beginnings from the bottom to the top of her family life and colorfuI career. DENR- I Regional Executive Director Atty. Crizaldy M. Barcelo led the officials and workforce who attended and paid tribute to the honoree who is an active advocate of women’s rights like Gender and Development (GAD) and Regional Advocacy for Gender and Equality (RAGE).

Virtual messages were delivered by DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations and Environment Atty. Juan Miguel Cuna, former PENR Officer of Pangasinan Eligio Soliman, and former Finance Division Chief Teresa Unico. Messages form DENR- I regional and field offices, close friends and family members were also delivered during the event. Also present during the program is former DENR- I RED Samuel R. Penafiel and former DENR- I ARD for Technical Services and now DENR- II RED Gwendolyn Bambalan, who personally shared their respective memorable messages to the honoree. Also seen during the program was Pangasinan PENR Officer Engr. Cezar Cabansag and La Union PENR Officer and incoming OIC, Office of the ARD for Management Services Engr. Raymundo Gayo. ARD Co, a dedicated public servant, served the government for 42 years and 38 years of which in the DENR.

Right after the retirement rites of ARD Co, the installation of incoming DENR- I OIC, Office of the ARD for Management Services followed. Engr. Gayo was installed as the new OIC, ARD M. S. due to the retirement ARD M. S. Co. RED Barcelo administered the installation of the new OIC ARD Management Services. (ZLP- RSCIG)
