wetlands 1In line with the celebration of the World Wildlife Day, Department of Environment and Natural Resources โ€“ Region I through the Conservation and Development Division (CDD) and the Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Group (RSCIG) conducted a communication, education and public awareness (CEPA) on the protection of wildlife to Grade 6 students of Gabu Elementary School in Laoag City on February 29, 2024 and bird watching activity at Paoay Lake National Park in Paoay on March 01, 2024, both in Ilocos Norte.        

Together with PENRO Ilocos Norte and CENRO Laoag, sixty (60) elementary students actively participated in the series of environmental lectures highlighting the theme discussed by Project Support Officer Dylan Dave Sadcopen and the importance of wildlife tackled by Environmental Management Specialist II Joey Zarate.This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œConnecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservationโ€ revolves to a sustainable future that is shared by all in the digital era of wildlife protection and how wildlife conservation is supported by digital conservation technology and services, as well as sustainable and lawful wildlife trading. Gabu Elementary School Principal Crisanto R. Oroceso expressed his gratitude to the speakers of the CEPA for imparting their knowledge on the celebration of the World Wildlife Day and looking forward to a more engaging activities with the agency in the protection and conservation of the environment and natural resources.         

wetlands 3On March 1, CDD and RSCIG staff conducted a bird watching activity at the Paoay Lake National Park. The conduct of the said activity is to provide an intimate connection between the people, wildlife(bird) and their natural environment, and to identify the various bird species in the area. Some of the birds sighted were White-throated Kingfisher, Collared Kingfisher, Zebra Dove, Tufted Duck, Egret and Heron. 

World Wildlife Day, which was established by the UN General Assembly in 2013, has grown to be the most significant yearly celebration of wildlife. Every year on the third of March, people throughout the world mark this day to emphasize the value of safeguarding wildlife and their habitats as well as to discuss issues that need to be resolved in order to support conservation efforts that preserve biodiversity and ecological balance.
