SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Several officials and personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 1 (DENR-I) together with the agency’s line bureaus, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB-I) and Environmental Management Bureau (EMB- I) participated in the celebration of the 53rd Earth Day 2023 with this year’s theme: “Invest in our Planet” which highlighted with a “fun run” traversing the major roads of the city proper of San Fernando, La Union last April 15, 2023.
A short program and Zumba first took place infront of the City Hall of San Fernando before the “fun run” commenced. The said Fun Run dubbed as “Takbo Para sa Kalikasan” (Run for Nature), was initiated by the city government of San Fernando, La Union and the Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan (LINK) Inc., a network of youth committed to empower young people in the protection, conservation and proper management of the environment and natural resources which was founded by City Vice Mayor Alfredo Pablo “Alf” Ortega. LINK is DENR Region 1’s ENR Ambassador which has become a force multiplier in environmental advocacy. The said activity was participated by more than a thousand individuals from various sectors of the civil society like the academe, local and national government agencies, uniformed personnel, among others. “...All of us has the responsibility to preserve our environment, to love our Mother Earth, it is not only today that we show our support and love to mitigate the problem of our environment we are facing now but let us start as early as now to preserve, conserve our environment…”, Vice Mayor Ortega said during his inspirational message.
All the participants happily joined the activity in which they tried their best to garner the “first place in the Fun Run”, “best Zumba dancer” and “group or agency with the most number of participants” and shared their experiences and values they gained on the activity. “..Bilang isang kabataan napakalaking opportunity ang ganitong kaganapan para sa kalikasan lalo na kami po ang susunod na henerasyon…kaya hinikayat ko ang mga kapwa ko kabataan na mag volunteer at tutulong sa lahat ng activities na alam namin makakaresolba sa problema sa ating kalikasan..”, the newly- crowned Ms. San Fernando City 2023 said.
Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as a day of education about environmental issues and support for the protection of the environment. (ZLP-RSCIG)
