Bakun 1Alilem, Ilocos Sur – Validators from the Office of Atty. Juan Miguel Cuna, DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations and Supervising Undersecretary for the EMB,  DENR Central Office conducted a site validation last March 23-25, 2022 at Alilem, Ilocos Sur as DENR-1's official entry for the Search for Recognizing Individuals/Institutions Towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (R.I.V.E.Rs) for Life Award 2020, Lower Bakun River, entered top 5 and will compete for the title with regions CAR, XIII, XII, and X. Cash prizes of Php100,000, Php75,000 and Php50,000 will be given to the 1st, 2nd and third placers, respectively.

Aside from the list of activities/interventions undertaken by the concerned Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs/CENROs) on their nominated river, the validation team also reviewed the Aesthetic Water Quality Improvement, Solid Waste Management, Partnership and Community Mobilization, and Information and Education Campaign (IEC) of the municipality. They were assisted by the personnel of the DENR I Regional Office, EMB  1, MGB 1, PENRO Ilocos Sur, CENRO Southern Ilocos Sur, and the Local Government Unit of Alilem, Ilocos Sur.

All were hopeful of being dubbed as the cleanest river in the entire country as the region's official entry last year, Naguillian River, won first place. This search, which was organized through the directive of the former DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu last 2018, aims to preserve and protect all rivers in the country from threats and pollution.
