San Fernando City, La Union- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region- I (DENR- I) through the Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Group (RSCIG), conducted a two- day Training on Communication Skills Enhancement cum Formulation of Annual IEC Action Plan for CY 2023 held at YNAD’S Place Hotel and Resort, San Fernando City, La Union on February 6- 7, 2023.

IOsParticipated by designated Information Officers (IO’s) from PENRO/CENROs, Environmental Management Bureau (EMB- I), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB- I) and the Regional Office Sectoral IOs, the activity aims to capacitate the Information O fficers in written and verbal communication skills which are very instrumental in delivering key messages of the agency to educate and inform every sector of the society. Likewise, the information officers refined their writing aptitudes, identify challenges and share the best IEC practices and strategies based on the accomplishments and to cascade the communication initiatives with the new policy direction of DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo- Loyzaga.

RSCIG Chief Renelita A. Santos welcomed the participants on the first day of the training, the first face- to –face Learning Event of DENR- I information officers after more than two years of bearing with the health restrictions due to the COVID- 19. DENR- I Regional Executive Director Atty. Crizaldy M. Barcelo delivered his inspirational message and urged the new pool of designated IO’s to be responsible enough on their respective roles to face the challenges of their mandated tasks. “There’s a dire need to improve your wits in all avenues of communication to properly execute your assigned tasks. Likewise, this training is an opportune time to share the best application in IEC practices and strategies as new trends of information and communication tools continue to surface,” he said. Ms. Adona P. San Diego, Chief of the Development Communication Division of tIOs 1he DENR Strategic Communication Initiatives Service (SCIS) served as the resource speaker and discussed about “Establishing Good Media Relations” The DENR- I pool of communicators also tackled and planned for calibrated IEC strategies for CY 2023 and the crafting of 2023 IEC Action Plan based on the DENR priority programs.

On the final day of the activity, Dr. Fe Tangalin, Associate Professor V of DMMMSU- South La Union Campus, imparted about vital points on Public Speaking where a brief public speaking workshop ensued which was enjoyed by everyone as they uncover their fears and faced the challenges to overcome it. Topics discussed and lectured during the training are very useful and vital for DENR- I information officers most particularly in the Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) activities of the agency which is an indispensable means of advancing DENR’s mission to conserve, protect and preserve the environment and natural resources. Since new trends of information and communication tools continue to surface in this digital era, DENR Information Officers should learn effective and more efficient strategies, to disseminate the agency’s advocacies, plans and programs.
