In an effort to assist LGUs in the preparation and approval of their Ten-Year Solid Waste Management Plans, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) – Region I of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Ecological Solid Waste Management Section (ESWMS) held a Review and Evaluation of Ten-Year Solid Waste Management Plans of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur, municipalities of Santiago, San Esteban, Tagudin, Cervantes and Narvacan in the Province of Ilocos Sur, and the municipalities of  Sto. Tomas and San Gabriel in the Province of La Union on May 15-17, 2019 at One Vittoria Hotel, Bantay, Ilocos Sur.  

EMB Region I Director Maria Dorica Naz-Hipe urged the LGUs to intensify the implementation of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 in their respective municipalities. She stressed the importance of involving everyone in the community in the ecological management of solid wastes, especially the practice of backyard composting, which significantly diverts wastes from the sanitary landfills.

Director Hipe, EMB-I Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division Chief Engr. Antonio L. Estrada, Provincial Environment Monitoring Officers of Ilocos Sur Eduardo T. Malasig and Leonilo B. Alinio,  ESWMS OIC-Chief Marygail Antonette C. Naanep, Senior Environmental Management Specialist Immaecor Joy Alicias-Amilao, Senior Environmental Management Specialist Engr. Melecio Llanes, Jr. and ESWMS technical personnel held one-on-one coaching with Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Management Officer of Ilocos Sur Edgar Yabes and representatives from  the seven LGUs to help them improve and finalize their respective Ten-Year Solid Waste Management Plans to be submitted to the National Solid Waste Management Commission for approval.
