DENR REGIONAL OFFICE I CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY 2015

SAN FERNANDO CITY, LA UNION - In line with the celebration of Arbor Day 2015, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Office I and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) La Union, led the annual tree planting activity at Barangay Masicong, San Fernando City, La Union last June 25, 2015. The Barangay Officials of Masicong also joined in the activity.

It was followed by a short program attended by government agencies such as; National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Science Technology (DOST), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Philippine Red Cross – San Fernando Chapter, and different media organizations such as, ABS-CBN Baguio, Gunglo Dagiti Mannurat Nga Iloko (GUMIL) – La Union chapter and DZNL Aksyon Radyo.

Arbor is derived from a Latin word which means tree. The first Arbor day was held in a Spanish village in Villanueva de la Sierra. Don Ramon Vacas Roxo, a local priest initiated the activity in 1805 which according to his chronicle, “convinced of the importance of the trees for health, hygiene, decoration, nature, environment and customs. 

Arbor Day in the Philippines has been institutionalized under Proclamation No. 643 that amended Proclamation No. 396 of June 2, 2003. Proclamation No. 396 enjoined the “active participation of all government agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations, private sector, schools, civil society groups and the citizenry in tree planting activity and declaring June 25, 2003 as Philippine Arbor Day”.(zlpaday-os/rpao)
