DENR-1 CULMINATES ENVIRONMENT MONTH CELEBRATION 2015

San Fernando City, La Union – After a series of month-long activities for the celebration of the Environment Month 2015,the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region-I together with the Environmental Managament Bureau (EMB) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) spear headed the culmination program through an environmental jam and music festival last June 30, 2015 at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University Mid La Union campus. The activity highlighted 24 entries for the Himig Para sa Kalikasan song writing and interpretation contest from different schools and universities in Region 1. The said contest launched on June 1st, aimed to increase the youth’s awareness on environmental conservation and development and promote various environmental advocacies.

The culmination activity also included jamming sessions, sharing of music, talent, love and appreciation for Mother Earth. Environmental partners such as the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, Holcim Philippines and Northern Cement Corporation also showed their all out support in the said celebration. The official band of Northern Cement Corporation, EC Jammers provided remarkable music and entertainment. 

In his Welcome Remarks, Assistant Regional Director for Management Services Pedro L. Noble expressed his gratitude in the active participation of different organizations during the environment month celebration. ARD Noble thanked everyone who made the celebration possible at the same time encouraged them to take the challenge on what remains to be done and recharge our enthusiasm with melodies in our hearts.

A total of 24 very promising entries astounded the judges and audience as they were well entertained. Various students from different schools and universities took the competition to the next level in the presentation and judging for the Himig Para sa Kalikasan contest. The entries include:

3. Kabataan Bantay sa Kalikasan – Lussoc National High School
4. Kalikasan Kay Ganda – Alaminos City National High School
5. Inang Kalikasan, Nag-iisang Tahanan – La Finn’s Scholastica School
6. Have you? – DMMMSU-MLUC
7. Mundo ay Sagipin – Dagupan City National High School
8. Mundo at Kalikasan – Pangasinan National High School
9. Kalikasan ko, Kayamanan ko – Urdaneta City National High School
10. Kalikasan Alagaan Para sa Kinabukasan – Bolinao School of Fisheries
11. Likas na Yaman, Yaman ng Inang Bayan – Don Eulogio De Guzman National High School
12. Ngayon na Mismo – Luna National High School
13. Awit ng Kalikasan – Dagupan City National High School
14. Kalikasan ay Alagaan – Damortis National High School
15. Buksan ang Iyong Mata – Tagudin National High School
16. Magkaisa Para sa Kalikasan – Batac National High School
17. Beautiful World – Alaminos National High School
18. Awiting Alay Sa Iyo – Cayucay National High School
19. Tara na, Sumama na –Pangasinan National High School
20. Sama Ka na – Ilocos Sur Polytechnic College
21. It’s the World to be – University of Northern Philippines
22. Magkaisa Para sa Kalikasa- Lussoc National High School
23. Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan – Luna National High School
24. Ako ang Simula – Tagudin National High School

The criteria for judging set for the competition was composed of originality-30%, environmental lyrics-30%, melody-30% and audience impact-10%. Participating students came along with their coaches and supportive teachers. Most of them performed with a musical ensemble to liven up the environmental festivity.

The top 5 performers were announced in no particular order which included, La Finns Scholastica School, Dagupan City National High School, DMMMSU-MLUC, Tagudin National High School and Don Eulogio De Guzman National High School.

The scores of the five (5) five finalists were set back to zero and then they were called for another rendition of their respective entries. After the final showdown, winners for the Himig para sa Kalikasan Song Writing and Interpretation contest were announced. 2nd runner up went to Don Eulogio De Guzman National High School with their song entry, “Likas na Yaman, Yaman ng Inang Bayan”. Scholastica La Finn’s School landed as 1st runner up with their song entry, “Inang Kalikasan, Nagiisang Tahanan”. Dagupan City National High School in high spirits, finished off as champion with their song entry, “Mundo ay Sagipin”.

Composer of “Mundo Ay Sagipin”, Micaella Cardozo of Dagupan City National High School shares that “there must be unity in everything we do; together, we should join hands in saving the environment for the future generation”.

Winners were awarded with certificates and cash prizes. Himig para sa Kalikasan Champion Micaella Cardozo of Dagupan City National High School received 15,000 pesos, 1st runner-up winner Zamantha Finn of Scholastica La Finns School received 10,000 pesos, and 2nd runner-up winner Don Eulogio De Guzman National High School received 5,000 pesos.
