DENR-1 KICKED OFF NATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH

CELEBRATION WITH A LINE-UP OF MONTH-LONG ACTIVITIES REGIONWIDE

In line with the observance of the National Women’s Month this March, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 1 has lined up its activities to highlight the role of women in decision-making.

The Regional Office led this year’s Kick off activities in celebrating this event through hanging of streamer bearing this year’s theme Juana Desisyon Mo ay Mahalaga sa Kinabukasan ng Bawat Isa, Ikaw Na!”, opening of Photo Exhibit focusing on Women and Men GAD Advocates and Champions at the DENR-1 Lobby and GAD Program.

Regional Director Samuel R. Peñafiel underscored the “importance of coming up with a line-up of activities regionwide in order to highlight the role of men and women as tools of development in our society as well as drumbeat our men and women partners and stakeholders in the conservation of our environment and natural resources”

Atty. Florence Marie G. Ulep, the incumbent President of RAGE (Regional Advocates in Gender Equality) who was the Guest Speaker during the said event stated that “has status of women really improved through the years”, and with this she shared the early beginnings of how she and small group of women advocated women’s concerns in the 1980’s receiving backlashes during those times.

However, with the passage of time, she stressed that “women advocacy later dubbed Gender and Development (GAD) has gone a long way with its mainstreaming in the government, the creation of the Philippine Commission on Women, legislation of the Magna for Women and other developments”.

Over the years, she stated that the gap of men and women in development is narrowing with more and more women taking part in decision-making. She then urged to work together in order to meet the needs of the vulnerable groups.

Meanwhile, DENR-Assistant Regional Director Gwendolyn Bambalan who is the concurrent GAD Regional Focal Person stated that this year’s Women’s Month is being celebrated with the objective to highlight the women’s key roles and accomplishments in leadership, increase awareness in the participation of women in decision-making and share strategies and best practices of successful women leaders.
