CLIMATE CHANGE…THEME IN ENVIRONMENTAL PAINTING CONTEST 

Different images of the environment ranging from lush vegetation, women protecting Mother Nature, deforestation, global warming, tree planting, disasters, fishes in abstract form and others were portrayed in the Environmental Painting Contest launched by the DENR through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

RD Samuel Peñafiel in his message during the Awarding Program pointing of the two (2) scenarios depicted in the paintings, one that is grim and the other hope said that “there is no reason to be negative as there are many things that are being done by different groups, organizations locally and globally to minimize the impact of Climate Change”. He then urged everyone “to continue with economic progress and help one another to avert the negative scenario”. 

            The competition was launched by the EMB in cooperation of the Artists Guild of La Union (AGLAUN) and private companies within Region 1 as part of the Environment Month Celebration in June.  Fourteen (14) entries of oil paintings using the theme “Raise your Voice not the Sea Level” were submitted wherein judging and awarding ceremonies was held at the Atrium of SM Rosales in Pangasinan on July 15, 2014.

Three (3) winners were adjudged for their originality, artistry and environmental message by a 5-member Judges consisting of RTD Barbara Pernia of the Forest Management Service, RTD Ronnie Jacinto Ms. Marizel Calpito of the Protected Areas Wildlife Coastal Zone Management Service (PAWCZMS) and chaired by Dr. Nathaniel Rimando of the AGLAUN. 

The beautifully-crafted painting of women embracing Mother Nature with a fitting title “The Warm Embrace” entry of Mr. Ricardo Sanchez garnered the top prize of P30,000. The artist from Bauang, La Union, Mr. Bernard Barbadillo with his piece “Ang aking impresyon sa pagbabago ng panahon… ikaw at ako ay may pananagutan” captured the 2nd prize of P25,000 while the entry of Mr. Felicisimo Ryan Boado with a title “Nasa Atin ang Simula” grabbed the 3rd prize of Php20,000. 

Dr. Nathaniel Rimando, Chairman of the Board of Judges and founder of AGLAUN said that majority of the participants are members of their organization. Mr. Bernard Barbadillo, 3rd Prize winner appreciated the  competition as this is a “very good opportunity of the artists to meet, converge and know one-another (for new members) and show our concern for the environment through our artistic skills”.

Eng’r. Alberto F. Badillo of the 1590 Energy Corporation and one of the judges and sponsor of the event, in his message stressed that he was overwhelmed about the competition because of the varied   environmental messages depicted in the paintings which he hoped that the meaningful aspirations will be taken heartily and not only portrayed in the paintings for a brighter future.

The private companies who sponsored the competition include Toyota Dagupan City, Inc., Honda Cars, Pangasinan, 1590 Energy Corporation, Nepo Mall Dagupan, Northern Cement Corporation, HOLCIM Phils., Borealis Corp., Jollibee, PCAPI and SoilTech Agrl. Products.

           All the oil painting entries are now on display at the DENR gallery for viewing while the winning pieces will be the property of the office. EEPatrimonio/DENR-RPAO-1
