To mark the celebration of Philippine Environment Month this year, DENR-1 launched a series of Kick off activities starting with a Monday Program on June 2, 2014 at the COA (Commission on Audit) Covered Court which was participated by different government agencies located within and outside the Government Center in Sevilla, City of San Fernando, La Union such as Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource (BFAR), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Commission on Audit (COA), Social Security System (SSS), Pag-Ibig Fund, Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Land Registration Authority (LRA), National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM), Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and the Philippine National Police (PNP). The event was graced by Assistant Regional Director (ARD) Imelda Acosta of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) who served as the Guest Speaker during the short program. ARD Acosta underscored the importance on the observance of the Environment Month to focus public attention on the protection and conservation of natural resources.

With this year’s slogan for the World Environment Day (WED) “Raise your Voice not the Sea Level”, she stressed that this is a fitting battlecry to drumbeat the global issue of Climate Change. Since the OCD is the lead agency in disaster awareness and preparedness, the lady executive proudly emphasized the OCD’s contribution in the awareness campaign in the adaptation measures related to Climate Change.

After the short program immediately followed the launching of the Photo Exhibit showcasing the agency’s major programs and activities at the 2nd Flr., DENR Bldg. The gallery featured wall-mounted posters encased in lighted sophisticated frames.

After a glimpse and short briefing on the major programs of the department, this was immediately followed by the unveiling of the Display Booth cum One-Stop Shop at the Plaza Gazebo - a collaborative activity with the City Government of San Fernando. The aforecited events were highlighted by a ribbon-cutting by DENR-1 Regional Director Samuel R. Peňafiel and ARD Imelda Acosta and participated by the DENR-1 Regional Technical Directors including the Regional Directors of the Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (MGB) and Environmental Management Bureau.

In the afternoon, a Press Conference in cooperation with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) ensued at the DENR-1 Conference Room. This was participated by several media outfits and personalities in print, broadcast and television including Senior officials of the agency led by RD Samuel R. Peňafiel who answered queries/discussed about concerns and issues particularly on the National Greening Program (NGP), Climate Change, land titling, wildlife protection and others.

During the meeting, RD Samuel R. Peňafiel stressed that the National Greening Program is much different from previous reforestation programs of the government underscored its importance and features compared with the previous reforestation programs which “embarked on massive planting involving wider areas to be planted and planting of a combination of forest species and fruit-bearing species to fastract rehabilitation of degraded areas and to help in the poverty alleviation of the uplands”.

Previous reforestation programs he said “were first implemented by administration followed by contract reforestation with participation of non-government organizations while the NGP is being undertaken by a wide-range of stakeholders which include People’s Organizations, government agencies, private entities and civil society organizations.

            Also discussed in the conference is the line-up of month-long activities in connection with the celebration of the Environment Month this June.
