2014 Womens Month

DENR-1 WOMEN’S MONTH 2014 CELEBRATED. Every month of March, women’s groups around the world including the Philippines, celebrate International Women’s Day or Women’s Month Celebration. The significant event can trace its origin that represents at least eight decades of women’s struggles for equality, justice, peace and development. In support of the women’s cause, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region I (DENR- I) started the kick-off activities led by members of the Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point in simultaneous with the DENR regular Monday Program last March 10, 2014 at the DENR Lobby, Government Center, Sevilla, San Fernando City, La Union.

As host of the regular Monday Program, Planning and Management Division Chief Engr. Cezar Manuel Cabansag started the opening program by sharing some trivia and statistics about gender development coupled with a video presentation about the “harmful effects of several beauty products to men and women’s health and the environment.” To the delight of the men and women of DENR, Engr. Cirilo M. Nuesca, Sr. delivered his original Ilocano composition poem entitled “Dagiti Filipina”, a unique literary verse depicting women here and abroad who excelled in their endeavors and advocacies that brought great contributions and influenced the cause of women’s rights and empowerment. Further, DENR Chief Administrative Officer and also the GAD Focal Point Person Florence Alicias introduced and welcomed the guest of honor and speaker, Civil Service Commission Region I (CSC I) Assistant Regional Director Hedy Jose “Jigz” Lardizabal who emphasized and discussed Filipino women’s sacrifices, struggles and successes. He then urged all women to contribute their share in relation to the problems of education, health, violence and other conflicts, politics, human rights, development and among other things.

Women’s groups all over the country are striving to bring about genuine equality by raising awareness and by a commitment to change long ingrained traditions and attitudes which continue discrimination. This year’s women’s Month Celebration theme, “Juana ang Tatag Mo ay Tatag Natin sa Pagbangon at Pagsulong,” emphasizes that Filipina women should contribute to a fuller understanding regarding all aspects of life, growth and development towards nation-building.
