    Attended by more than a hundred of participants from different stakeholders of the minerals industry, the  12th Regional Mining Summit was conducted on April 17-19, 2013 at Hotel Ariana in Bauang, La Union.

    It was graced by no less than the President of Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA), Hon. Louie R. Sarmiento.  The forum was organized yearly by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau- Region 1 however  this year, it was done in coordination with the Philippine Society of Mining Engineers-Northern Luzon Chapter under the leadership of Dir. Carlos A. Tayag, MGB 1 OIC-Regional Director.

   Thirteen (13) Technical Papers were presented that involve  aspects of the minerals industry from the different stakeholders who participated in the summit.

   The participants were also given a chance to have a plant  visit at Holcim Philippines-La Union Plant and at Pebble Picking Activities in Luna, La Union.

   The activity had  provided  the participants   the experience to actually observe the  Safety, Health, Environment and Social  (SHES) , Corporate Social Responsibility/Social Devt. & Mgt. Program ( CSR/SDMP) and greening endeavors of the company.

 In his message, Engr. Sarmiento stressed the untapped potentials of the minerals industry as a catalyst for economic growth by giving relevant statistics on gross production value, exports of minerals and mineral products as well as employment rate in mining and quarrying.

   In one  point however, he reminded that the minerals industry has yet to reach its full potential since it suffers from negative public image magnified by the issues raised by certain civil society groups and individuals who are united in blocking the development of the mining sector. He thanked the organizers of the activity for his chance to be in the region and able to speak out his mind. He said his visit in the region is very relevant because he wanted to reach out to a greater audience for advocacy.

    A Press Conference was also held where local media practioners from San Fernando City and Bauaung, La Union were present.

  This year’s summit had provided a venue for more information sharings and interactions regarding experiences,  policy updates of the government as well as potential technologies and programs that are envissioned to facilitate massive development efforts towards countryside progress.
