Earth Day celebration at Region 1

April 22, San Fernando City, La Union,  Today,  the DENR Regional Office spearheaded the celebration of  the Earth Day  with a meaningful triple treats:  the scientific –based lecture on Organic –Fertilizer Production from household wastes, launching  of the DENR- RO Rooftop Greening and Earth Day quiz for  high school students.  The activity revolved on the theme: “Earth Day Everyday, Everywhere, for Everyone”.

Regional Office Earth Day celebration environmental partners are Holcim –Phils. Bacnotan Plant, Mariano Marcos State University - Batac, and Jollibee San Fernando City. The activities are initiated by EMB Regional Director Joel Salvador , PAWCZMS thru RTD Pol Najera and OIC , Office of the RED, /OIC for Forestry, For. Barbara M. Pernia.

RED Samuel Peñafiel consistently reminding  everyone that saving our mother earth is everybody’s responsibility and should be done each day. Our concerns should be holistic- from waters (water bodies, air, land, and even undergrounds and in the depth of the oceans. These are all interlinked with each other). 

Prof. Floramante Pastor, - professor of MMSU Batac lectured on the organic fertilizer production thru household wastes, a very practical way of producing organic fertilizer for gardens and plantations. The organic fertilizer production can be done in every household and an environment friendly way of reducing garbage and best way of producing vegetables without pesticide residues, hence, good for health, aside from environment –friendly technology.

The DENR’s strong advocacy campaign on Solid Waste Management targeted even the Householdhelpers (or Kasambahay)for a series of trainings on Solid Waste Management,   to practice the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) of garbage to help ease up garbage problem in the community. RED Peñafiel is also imposing upon all DENR employees to be the models for the Solid waste management in the office and in their respective communities applying the principles of 3 Rs and organic greening program. “This is not only good for the environment but also economical and safe for the whole family’s healthy. We also should practice healthy lifestyle”,  says RED Peñafiel. .    

Meanwhile, RD Joel Salvador also led the ribbon cutting and launching of DENR Rooftop greening project together with all the Regional Technical Directors present – RTD Lydia Lopez (LMS), RTD Pol Najera of PAWCZMS, RD Carlos Tayag of MGB, and representatives of ERDS. Selected species of plants are grown in recycled half-cut drums. Plans are on the way for the establishment of solar panel – envisioned to get as much as one-third of the energy requirement for the building, and a landscaped rooftop garden for relaxation following the architectural design for green building.  

Towards the afternoon, 4 SIF- CURMA (Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions), 9 Holcim volunteers and 15 high school students from 5 High Schools joined the environmental quiz bee sponsored by the Jollibee and Holcim-Phils, Bacnotan.
