DENR I Conducts IEC Campaign on ‘Big Cats’

 

 

            City of San Fernando, La Union - An Information Education and Communication (IEC) campaign in celebration with the World Wildlife Day (WWD) with the theme Big cats: predators under threat", conducted by personnel from Conservation Development Division (CDD), Regional Public Affairs Office (RPAO), of DENR Region Office and Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) La Union last March 5, 2018 at La Union National High School.

 

          There were seventy (70) Senior High School participated in during the lecture and actively partaken with the question and answer led by the personnel from the CDD. The activity aimed to provide information about the expanded definition of ‘big cats’ and to raise awareness on the conservation of the lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar, as well as the cheetah, snow leopard, puma, clouded leopard and related species.

 

             An Audio Visual Presentation (AVP) on different classifications of ‘big cats’ were presented to the participants including distribution of leaflets/flyers containing the pictures and insights of ‘big cats’.

 

The group also shared other information’s as to how, where and when the world wildlife day created, underscored;

“Over the past century we have been losing big cats, the planet’s most majestic predators, at an alarming rate. World Wildlife Day 2018 gives us the opportunity to raise awareness about their plight and to galvanize support for the many global and national actions that are underway to save these iconic species. Through World Wildlife Day big cats will generate the level of attention they all deserve to be sure they are with us for generations to come”, CITES Secretary-General, John E. Scanion, said. “Big cats species are found in Africa, Asia, and North, Central and South America, representing a virtually global distribution, and representations of big cats, such as for car logos, by sporting clubs and the fashion industry, are used globally.

 

          On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 3 March, the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world's wild animals and plants. DENR @31 “Ikaw, Ako Tayo ang Kalikasan”

 

Quezon City – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources celebrated its 31st year of existence at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center, Ampitheater with this year’s theme, “DENR @31: Ikaw, Ako, Tayo ang Kalikasan”.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte who graced the anniversary celebration and is proud to see the employees who are working hard to support his administration in the protection of the country’s natural wealth.

In his message, PRRD encouraged the employees to work harder in the execution of its mandate. He congratulated the leadership of Sec. Roy A. Cimatu for doing a commendable job in protecting the environment citing the Boracay rehabilitation to bring back its glory as the jewel of the world. The Chief Executive took his sweet time in making his encounter with the DENR employees on a light mode as he teased Sec. Cimatu his experience with the Secretary when he was still the Local Government Executive of Davao City and Sec. Cimatu as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and they were big bike buddies.

Secretary Roy A. Cimatu was a picture of a happy and contented leader seeing his subordinates who have exerted all efforts and are doing the best that they can in the protection and conservation of the environment. In his message, Sec. Cimatu, he sincerely thanked the men and women of the agency diligently working for the cause of the environment.

Sec. Cimatu took pride in sharing that the DENR completed its 30th year on a high note, by exceeding most of the agency’s targets in 2017. He also underscored the “proposed policy reinventing mining that will spread the benefits for the people without compromising the environment and natural resources of the country.”

The DENR employees cheered their respective representative in the 2018 DENR Milenyal ng Kalikasan. Participants to this contest include: DENR Central Office, MGB Central Office, NAMRIA, FMB, Regions 3, NCR, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA where the contender from National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) won the contest.

Recognizing that all of the achievements of the agency will not be realized, Sec. Cimatu likewise acknowledged the support coming from the Legislative Branch of the government in helping DENR fulfill its mandate in preserving and protecting our environment. Specifically naming Sen Loren Legarda and Congresswoman Josephine Sato who have been supportive in the efforts of the department in the conservation and management of the protected areas through crafting of significant bills for the country’s vast natural resources.

 

DENR to help Rebuild Marawi

Prior to the Chief Executive’s arrival, a Deed of Donation signing also transpired wherein DENR donates P43.5M worth of confiscated lumber to help in the rehabilitation of the battle-scarred Marawi City. This is translated to 871,453 board feet of confiscated illegally cut wood. The Task Force Bangon Marawi is chaired by Sec. Eduardo del Rosario. These confiscated forest products were seized in the DENR’s anti-illegal logging operations in the Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCSARGEN and Caraga regions. These forest products may be used to repair school buildings, build school furniture and other rehabilitation efforts solely for Marawi City. This effort will help in the agency’s pursuit in addressing the extreme degradation of the country’s forests.

 

Land Titles awarded to 75 Metro Manila Residents

On its anniversary, DENR also awarded a total of 75 land titles to residents of Metro Manila through the “Handog Titulo” program of the department. It was President Rodrigo Roa Duterte who handed over the title to the beneficiaries from the municipality of Pateros, cities of Taguig, Makati, Paranaque and Valenzuela.

This is a manifestation that the government will continue to promote social justice and poverty alleviation by way of efficiently processing and distribution of the patents. It is a vehicle to propel progress and development.

Region 1’s delegation headed by RD Reynulfo A. Juan with the Division / Section Chiefs, PENROs and CENROs and staff along with the Bureau Directors Ma. Victoria Abrera and Engr. Carlos A. Tayag of EMB and MGB respectively greeted Sec. Cimatu as the anniversary celebration coincided with his 72nd birthday.

Some officials who witnessed the DENR anniversary also include DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, Congressmen Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte and Vincent “Bingbong” Crisologo of Quezon City, Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, Former DENR Secretaries Gina Lopez, Heherson Alvarez, and Horacio Ramos. (RAS)

DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu visited his hometown in Ilocos Norte recently and made a side trip to Piddig, where he met with local officials to gain more insights on the ongoing development of the town’s model project under the national convergence initiative on coffee farming.

A Serpent Eagle was recently rescued from the Eco-Trail of Holcim Phils. Located in Quirino, Bacnotan, La Union last July 21, 2017.  The said eagle was allegedly trapped at a cage which Holcim provided to feed some 20 species of migratory birds gliding within the area.  It was found that the said eagle could not make its way out from the cage, reason for the workers to save the struggling eagle from being trapped.  Spilornis Cheela is the scientific name of the Crested Serpent Eagle which was named “Kailian,” coined from the local term of “Kababayan or Kabayan.”  Holding “Kailian” during the ceremonial release on July 25, 2017 are Bacnotan Mayor Francis Fontanilla (on blue collared shirt) and Holcim Plant Manager Eraño Santos.  Looking on are DENR1 representatives, Wildlife Handler Joe Nullar, Enforcement Division Chief Atty.
